High School Capstone Courses need the involvement of the business community

Beginning with the Class of 2013, all Chanhassen and Chaska High School students will be required to complete a Capstone Course before graduation. A Capstone Course is a project-based class that immerses students in an authentic 'real world' experience.

Capstone projects will originate from a student's interest in one of four Areas of Interest in the high school curriculum. Within these areas, students focus on a program of study with specific requirements that explore career strands in-depth. The Capstone courses occur within these Areas of Interest:

  • Arts and Communication
  • Global Studies
  • Health and Social Sciences
  • STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Key to Capstone Success: Community Partnerships
Our students need advisors, mentors, or one-time classroom speakers to help them be successful. Your experience and counsel will impact the direction of student work, ensuring that students take the appropriate paths on their journey to a completed project.

Businesses and community members are invited to participate in the following ways:

  • Review Panel Members
Serve with other experts in their fields to listen to presentations, review project work and provide feedback and encouragement to students. Time commitment: 3-5 hours.
  • Guest Speakers
Conduct a one-time presentation or demonstration on a specialized topic or an area of expertise for a classroom of students. Time commitment: 2-3 hours.
  • Capstone Project Consultants
Work with an individual or team of students as advisors for a specific project. They provide support such as project development ideas, networking with other professionals, problem solving, and ongoing feedback. A personal background check is required for this level of involvement. Time commitment: 12-15 hours.
  • Capstone Project Mentors

Work with a student as he/she participates in a field experience within their place of business. This might include internships, job shadowing experiences or participation in special projects within the workplace. A personal background check is required for this level of involvement. Time commitment: 20-50 hours.
